Eyewear maker EssilorLuxottica has announced plans to expand its capacity to produce smart glasses, Reuters has reported. Meta has collaborated with the manufacturer to produce Essilorluxottica smart glasses in its quest to lead the smart glasses industry.

With the expanded smart glasses production, the company will be able to produce up to 10 million units per year. The smart glasses maker will also be seeking to strengthen its partnership with Meta.

Growing Sales

Smart glasses come with an inbuilt computer and microphones that enable users to connect with devices such as smartphones through voice commands. Meta’s Ray-Bans smart glasses come with a mic, camera, audio, and AI assistant all wrapped into the frame. According to EssilorLuxottica’s Chief Executive Officer Francesco Milleri, the eyewear company has already sold in excess of 2 million pairs of smart glasses.

These Ray-Ban Meta sales date back to September 2023 when the two companies unveiled the glasses.

“The rate of activation and the time of utilization have been constantly increasing since the launch, showing that this product is becoming part of our daily life,” Milleri said during a post-results call with analysts.

EssilorLuxottica Meta partnership dates back to 2019. The collaboration led to the creation of two versions of Ray-Ban smart glasses. In 2024, the two companies entered a new long-term deal that is aimed at taking them to the next decade.

Late last year, Meta’s successful collaboration with EssilorLuxottica triggered a wave of smart glasses fear of missing out among big techs. Ray-Ban smart glasses were bestsellers in the majority of Ray-Ban stores across the Middle East, Europe and Africa.

New Brands and Features

As EssilorLuxottica boosts production of smart glasses, it will continue to innovate. New innovations will be driven by growth in usage rates and activations. The company plans to increase production in Southeast Asia and China to meet its annual targets. The company CEO said the eyewear maker is working on releasing new smart glass brands and features as it seeks to extend its subscription service.

“Consistently with our open model, we look at this product like a shared platform ready to embark on third-party brands and new functions, also in the form of subscription services”, Milleri added.

According to the CEO, the company’s expanded capacity for production of Ray-Ban Meta glasses will enable it to achieve its annual target of 10 million units by the end of 2026. The company hopes to use the expanded capacity to produce Nuance Audio glasses and other types of smart glasses that integrate open-aar hearing options.

Future of Wearable Tech

EssilorLuxottica’s initiative to extend production of smart glasses to other brands will involve exploring new collaborations. This expansion means that the future of wearable tech remains bright. The company’s ambitious growth plan is a clear reflection of a growing trend to extend tech beyond conventional uses.

Meta’s successful collaboration with EssilorLuxottica has triggered a new wave of smart glasses FOMO among big techs. Counterpoint Research reported that Meta smart glasses have become a best seller in the majority of Ray-Ban stores in the Middle East, Europe and Africa. Sales have already topped 1 million units. And this success has now motivated rivals to develop their own smart glasses, Reuters reported.

A Less Bulky Design

Meta’s Ray-Bans smart glasses come with a mic, camera, audio, and AI assistant all wrapped into the frame. A pair of the augmented reality glasses retails at $300. The smart glasses have a normal look. Unlike the bulky AR/VR headsets that have failed to appeal to the masses, the glasses are lightweight, weighing below 50 grams.

Their in-built processing power and memory offer users helpful features such as handsfree video or photo capture and real-time translation. The smart glasses use the latest chipsets, batteries, and software. This makes it easy for users to connect them to their smartphones flawlessly.

The process is very similar to that of connecting smartphones to wireless earbuds. Meta’s smart glasses boast of a four-hour battery life. This is about four times that of its rival product, Snap which lasts for less than an hour.

Big Tech Interest

Several big techs are already eyeing the smart glasses market, which explains why the industry will come into sharp focus in 2025. Baidu unveiled smart glasses that are powered by AI bot, Ernie, last month. In the days that followed, reports emerged that Amazon is designing AI-powered glasses for its delivery drivers. Amazon’s smart driver eyeglasses are part of the company’s wider strategy to ensure smooth and efficient delivery of customer orders.

Sources close to the e-commerce giant said that once done, Amazon’s smart eyeglasses will provide drivers with turn-by-turn navigation along delivery routes and at every stop. The company will build the glasses on Amazon’s echo frames smart glasses, which enable users to use voice commands from Alexa and listen to audio. They will leverage a small display located on one of the lenses and will be able to take images of delivered products.

Reports indicate that Samsung, Apple, Alphabet, and Xiaomi are also working on new smart glass products. Suppliers are also boosting their production capacity. Vuzix, a company that specializes in lens production estimates that it will be able to make up to 50 million units per year by 2028. This is a huge increase from the 1 million units it produced this year.

Profitability Challenge

Even with the growing big tech interest, the profitability of smart glasses remains a mirage. Analysts estimate the cost of making a pair of Ray-Bans smart glasses is about $135. This implies a 45% gross margin. This is slightly higher than Apple’s smartwatch, which is about 30%. Reducing the cost of battery and processor chips without affecting the features in the smart glasses and their functionality will be an uphill task for Meta.

Meta is currently hosting the Ray-Bans smart glasses in its Reality Labs. The division also hosts Orion, Meta’s augmented reality glasses prototype. Although forecasts show that this unit will grow fast in the coming years, it is expected to suffer operating losses of about $60 billion in the coming three years. But despite these losses, Meta plans to continue investing significant amounts in Reality labs.
As we think about the 2025 budgeting process for Reality Labs, we want to make sure that we are investing appropriately behind the consumer momentum that we see,” Meta CFO Susan Li said during the Q3 earnings call.

Meta has already asked the unit to reduce its spending by about 20% between 2024 and 2026. Meta unveiled the Ray-Bans smart glasses and a prototype of its Orion AR glasses on September 25, 2024 during its annual Connect Event.

Facebook’s owner Meta has presented a new artificial intelligence (AI) tool that can change the way users communicate in the Metaverse. According to Reuters, Meta said on Thursday, 12th December 2024 that it is releasing a new AI model, Meta Motivo.

The Meta release of the new AI model has created a buzz as it can control the movement of human-like digital agents. Meta has been investing heavily in AI after showcasing AR glasses at the Connect 2024 event in September this year.

Meta has been releasing a lot of AI models to be tested by developers. The company said in a statement, “We believe this research could pave the way for fully embodied agents in the Metaverse, leading to more lifelike NPCs, democratization of character animation, and new types of immersive experiences.

Meta pushed tech innovation a notch higher when it unveiled a prototype of its Orion AR glasses on September 25 at the Connect Event. According to CNBC, the impressive part of Meta’s Orion AR glasses prototype is not the flashy graphics. Rather, it’s the compactness and comfort that comes with the Orion glasses.

Glimpse into the Future

During the Connect Event, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg pitched the AR Orion glasses as a glimpse of the future. Endowed with a thick frame and black in color, Meta’s Orion AR glasses are fitted with a wireless puck that allows them to run apps, more like a holographic pingpong game or digital chess.

The prototype glasses are part of Meta’s multibillion dollar plan to shape the next generation of computing for the metaverse. Although Orion may not immerse users fully in the virtual world, in the real world, the glasses can overlay graphics. Meta’s Orion glasses are also less cumbersome to wear for prolonged periods.

The form factor didn’t feel meaningfully different from wearing a pair of heavy, ordinary glasses, and they were not uncomfortable to wear. “This is the first generation — four years from now, how much smaller will they be?,” a CNBC reporter who tried the Orion AR Glasses said.

Face Computers

At the very basic level, Orion is a fancy computer that one wears on the face. It addresses face-computer challenges that have persisted for a long time. These include weight, heat, tiny field of view, and low resolution.

Meta’s AR glasses technology allows users to see digital holograms that display visual icons of apps like Facebook and Instagram. Digital icons are overlaid atop the real-world, a big improvement from the passthrough technique applied in virtual reality devices. To create overpasses, cameras outside the headset give users a digital representation of the real world. This representation is blended with computer graphics via device screens.

Custom-designed by Meta, Orion augmented reality glasses apply an expansive method to overlay digital images from the real world. It uses special lenses made from a refractive material known as silicon carbide to achieve this goal. Orion glasses are fitted with miniature projectors in-built into the arms. These projectors direct light into the silicon carbide lenses, allowing users to see holograms in their field.

Orion comes with a wristband that allows users to open, close, or scroll through applications. The lightweight band moves digital icons by sensing hand and finger movements, as well as gestures accurately.

Imaging the Future

Meta imagines a future where people will use the first true augmented reality glasses to interact with AI and communicate through digital information that’s overlaid in the real world.

I had thought that the hologram part of this was going to be possible before AI. It’s an interesting twist of fate that the AI part is actually possible before the holograms are really able to be mass-produced at an affordable price,” Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said.

Orion leverages generative AI capabilities present in Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses and integrates a visual element into the field view of a user. From the current prototype, Meta’s journey to full-fledged AR glasses will be gradual. On one end, the social media giant will produce AI-powered smart glasses. On the other end, it will produce glasses with small displays that offer lighter-touch interactions. Orion represents full-fledged AR glasses with sufficient computing power.

The AR glasses space will also get competitive as other players launch their versions of augmented reality glasses. Snap is already working on next generation AR spectacles. Currently, Apple is competing in headsets with the Vision Pro as it develops its own AR glasses. It will be interesting to see how augmented reality shapes personal computing moving forward.

Meta has unveiled a working prototype of AR glasses. The tech giant showcased the glasses that it calls Orion on Wednesday, September 25 during its annual Connect Event held at its California headquarters. Meta’s Connect Event AR glasses reveal pushed the company’s share prices up by 2.2%.

Reuters reported that the AR glasses launch happened as Meta laid out its vision for developing products that will bridge the gap between the real world and the virtual one.

This is the physical world with holograms overlaid on,” Meta CEO, Mark Zuckerberg said during the event.

The Dev Kit

Meta’s Orion glasses are made from magnesium alloy. The company designed custom silicon to power the glasses. Zuckerberg referred to Orion as a dev kit, adding that Meta will be working to make the glasses smaller, affordable, and sleeker. Users can interact with AR glasses through voice, hand-tracking, and a neural interface on the wrist.

Zuckerberg showed how Meta’s first true AR glasses can display several windows with Messenger and WhatsApp video-calls, texts, and Instagram reels. However, his presentation only displayed a few details about Orion’s capabilities. The video highlighted positive reactions by testers who included Nvidia CEO, Jensen Huang.

Users can interact with the AR glasses through voice, hand-tracking, and a neural interface on the wrist. Other big tech companies have attempted to develop AR devices before with little success, Google’s Glass glasses is one of the most notable failures.

A Challenging Process

Meta’s reveal of AR glasses has been a long process. When he first pivoted the company towards creating metaverse systems in 2021, CEO Zuckerberg positioned AR technology as great work and even changed the company name to Meta.

The company has experienced technical challenges with the project as acknowledged by its head of Metaverse Reality Labs, Andrew Bosworth. In November last year, Bosworth indicated that Meta was facing challenges developing a market-ready AR product.

Since 2021 Meta has made heavy investments to build its metaverse system. This includes financing AI, AR, and other kinds of metaverse technologies. These investments have pushed its 2024 capital expense projections to a high of $37 billion to $40 billion. In quarter one of this year, the company’s metaverse unit, Reality Labs recorded a loss amounting to $8.3 billion and a total of $16 billion last year.

Commercialization Pathway

Meta plans to distribute the first generation of AR glasses internally and to selected developers this year. Each device cost the company thousands of dollars to produce. The initial shipment of commercial Meta AR glasses will be made in 2027.

The social media giant anticipates that by this time, technical improvements to the product will reduce production costs. PP Foresight Analyst, Paolo Pescatore said Meta’s vision to commercialize VR and AR products is possible. He however noted that most people are still wary of AI and need to be convinced.

Meta’s AI World

Meta’s Connect Event kicked off with a showcase of its expanded bet on AI. The social media presented multiple product offerings powered by its ChatGPT-like chatbot. It also announced plans to include personalized images generated by the bot on Instagram and Facebook feeds.

Meta also unveiled various AI software enhancements during the event. These include audio upgrades of the company’s digital assistant, Meta AI. The tech giant said that Meta AI will now respond to voice commands. Users will have the option of making the AI assistant sound like celebrities as it features voices of Judi Dench, John Cena, Kristen Bell, and others.

I think that voice is going to be a way more natural way of interacting with AI than text,” Zuckerberg said.

Meta will be adding video and real-time language translation capabilities to its AI assistants later this year saying over 400 million people use Meta AI each month.

Meta also highlighted AI Assistants in its Ray-Ban smart glasses that enable users to stream music from Spotify and scan QR codes through voice prompts. The company unveiled Quest 3S, a product line of mixed-reality headsets. The company discontinued Quest 2 and Quest Pro devices at the event.

New AI Models

In line with its AI model sharing strategy, Meta released three latest versions of Llama 3 models at the 2024 Connect event. Two of these models understand both text and images. The third one is a basic text-only model that can run entirely on user devices. Meta first revealed the open source model in July this year. Llama allows companies to train it on custom data and modify it to suit their needs.

The Meta Connect event highlighted a future where AR, VR, and AI converge to create an immersive, highly interactive world. From the next generation AR glasses to the AI-powered chatbots unveiled at the event, Meta is paving the way for a digital ecosystem that blurs the line between the virtual and real world.

That would render the Apple headset a mixed-reality tech device, which will also have two extremely high resolution (8K) displays, eye-detection cameras, and capabilities of mapping one’s surrounding objects.

Ming-Chi Kuo mentioned that the headset should have a total of 15 optical cameras to combine innovative biometrics, provide see-through capabilities, and map out environments.

The device should come in at less than 150 grams to allow for a comfortable wearing experience. That means that it won’t be able to house incredibly powerful chipsets.
