The UK Competition and Markets Authority will be probing whether Apple holds strategic market dominance in its mobile system.

“The App Store facilitates billions of transactions annually to help developers grow their businesses and provide a world-class customer experience. To further support developers’ evolving business models – such as exceptionally large content catalogs, creator experiences, and subscriptions with optional add-ons – we’re introducing the Advanced Commerce API,” the tech giant in a statement.

Introduction of the Advanced Commerce API forms part of the company’s broader response to challenges that developers of apps that lack conventional monetization models. Developers can submit requests to use the API to manage in-app purchases within their applications with greater flexibility. This will enable them to utilize App Store’s trusted commerce system.

More Use Cases

Apple also announced that it had expanded the eligibility of developers and apps as well as use cases that will apply on its new API in three broad categories. The first use case of the Advanced Commerce API is apps that feature huge libraries of one-time purchases and frequent updates. Such apps include courses and audiobooks.

The next use case is apps that add creator-led content that allow users to make a one-time payment in order to access such content or renew their subscription. The other use case is user purchase add-ons that are placed within subscription services. These could include additional sports, channels, or region-specific content that is marketed as a renewable purchase. Apple said it’s not making changes to the commission structure in order to support additional use cases.

Retaining Developers

In 2024, Apple asked Patreon, a creator platform to shift to its App Store billing system for creator content. Failure to shift to this platform, Patreon risked being pushed out of the Apple Store. Patreon agreed to migrate its iOS app to the Apple-owned billing system progressively and is set to complete the process in November this year. With Apple’s new API support, the big tech will support use cases for companies like Patreon better.

Earlier this month, Apple unveiled a raft of changes to iOS in the EU market as it responded to the region’s Digital Markets Act anti-competition provisions. The changes included a new fee for developers. The new laws pushed Apple into supporting alternative payment processing options and third-party app stores on its platform.

The big tech has been working to provide value for developers in order to keep them within its ecosystem. Some of the Apple app development updates that the company has made to achieve this include allowing developers to give buyers whose subscriptions lapse discounts and accommodating retro game emulators from different parts of the world.

Apple is working on a new application called Apple Invite app, an application that would change how users plan and manage events. Apple is seeking for an approval from the Indonesian government to be able to sell its product in the country. The Government has in return asked Apple to increase its $100 million proposal in the country.

Challenges with Domestic Manufacturing Criteria

According to CNBC, the latest iPhones do not meet Indonesia’s 40% domestic manufactured criteria. The tech giant has made the proposal to build a manufacturing plant in the country so as the Indonesian government lifts the ban on the Apple’s iPhone 16.

The ban has been implemented to promote local products and industries while also increasing foreign investment in the country.

Details of Apple’s $100 Million Proposal

The government officials met Apple’s representative on Thursday, 21st November 2024, for the investment of $100 million in the Indonesian economy over next two years.

In October 2024, Tim Cook visited China as well to talk about the new intelligence feature rollout and to partner with the local manufacturers.

As per report, the $100 million investment from Apple will go to building research and development centers. Also, these funds will also be invested in building a professional training academy in the country. Additionally, the U.S. tech giant is also planning to manufacture accessory product components for AirPods Max from July 2025.

Ongoing Negotiations for a Better Offer

While Apple’s new proposal is 10 times bigger than the originally given offer, the government is still negotiating with the company for a better offer.

Febri Hendri Antoni Arif, the spokesperson for the industry ministry told the local media, “From the government’s perspective, of course, we want this investment to be larger.” He added that the larger investment would help in the growth of the Indonesian manufacturing sector. He also said that the local industry is capable of supporting the production of other Apple accessories like chargers.

Indonesia’s Potential as a Key Market

According to Le Xuan Chiew, a Canalys analyst focusing on Apple strategy research, even though Indonesia represents a small section of Apple’s market, it has a huge potential of growth as it is world’s fourth largest population. He also said, “Its young, tech-savvy population with growing digital literacy aligns with Apple’s strategy to expand [global sales].”

Apple Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook visited China on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, to meet with officials in Beijing. This visit aimed to address the increasing competition in China and discuss the upcoming Apple Intelligence rollout.

During Tim Cook’s visit to China, he met with Mr. Jin Zhuanglong, the Minister of Information Technology in China, to talk about Apple’s development initiatives within the country, focusing on crucial areas such as online network data security and cloud services.

According to CNBC, the ministry reported that Tim Cook assured officials of Apple’s dedication to boosting investment in China and collaborating with local companies to foster mutual growth.

As China opens its economy further, Apple is planning to increase its investment to meet the rising demand for its products. Cook expressed this commitment in a conversation with Xinhua, stating, “Apple is keen to seize the opportunities presented by China’s opening up and will continue to increase its investment in the country, thus contributing to the high-quality development of the industrial and supply chains.”

Collaboration with Local Partners

During his visit to China, Apple CEO Tim Cook also met with Yang Jie, the chairman of China Mobile, to talk about digital content and advancing cooperation in 5G applications. Senior Research Analyst Ivan Lam noted the significance of Cook’s second trip to China, especially as local competitors are developing and introducing new operating systems. Lam remarked, “This trip seems notable now as the company could be looking to shore up collaboration with local players to launch Apple Intelligence in China.”

Le Xuan Chiew, an analyst at Canalys’, highlighted that the rollout of Apple Intelligence was a major motive behind Cook’s trip, which is part of efforts to “bolster the importance of China to Apple’s global strategy.”

Apple’s Market Position in China

In July 2024, a report from Reuters indicated a 6.7% decline in Apple’s shipments to China, while local competitors have experienced significant growth. For instance, Huawei has seen a remarkable 41% year-on-year increase, and Vivo continues to hold the top market share at 19%. In contrast, Apple has fallen from the third position to the sixth, with only 14% of the market.

Apple Intelligence is an artificial intelligence feature that integrates across Apple devices. The feature comes with enhancements like an improved voice assistant, voice recording transcription, and email organization.

During his visit to the offices of Weibo, a major Chinese social media platform, Cook stated, “Apple hopes to bring Apple Intelligence to Chinese consumers as soon as possible, but there are strict regulatory processes it must get through.” Notably, Weibo is among the local developers that created applications for Apple’s Vision Pro, which launched in the Chinese market in June.

Product Launches and Market Challenges

Tim Cook frequently visits to China to connect business partners, meet local officials, and oversee product launches as it is one of the largest markets for Apple. For instance, Apple launched the iPhone 16 in September 2024, which saw a strong start with a 20% increase in sales during the first three weeks compared to the 2023 model.

However, despite the successful launch, Apple has been grappling with a 2% year-on-year decline during that same three-week period. The company also experienced a 5.7% drop in market share year-on-year in the second quarter of this year. Notably, on the same day that the iPhone 16 went live, Huawei launched its competing handsets, setting the stage for fierce competition in the market as Huawei plans to introduce additional competitive devices next week.
